Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG) and the Organizing Committee, it is our pleasure to welcome you to Madrid for the 2023 International Conference and Exhibition (ICE).

This year’s conference theme, “Geoscience Solutions to the Energy Trilemma”, aims to connect our professional community with the current challenges that the Global Energy Sector is going through: reliability, affordability and sustainability. Petroleum Geoscientists and Engineers have contributed greatly to human progress, finding and developing reliable and affordable energy for decades. Our latest challenge is to expand our impact to the sustainability part of the equation. ICE 2023 will address both old and new challenges, as well as the opportunities that they represent for the future of the Oil Industry professionals.

The ICE 2023 conference program will target the diversity of topics that current events demand from our industry, topics that will be addressed from the technical, management and regional points of view. Our technical sessions will cover the traditional themes associated with the Oil & Gas Exploration and Development disciplines, together with the latest Energy Transition and Digitalization trends. The executive sessions will discuss not only the strategic context of global energy trends but also very specific topics, such as the future of conventional O&G Exploration activities, the growing importance of CO2 disposal, Geothermal and Critical Minerals, as well as the new roles and digital competencies that will be required from Geoscientists. Our country sessions will address the same matters from the regional point of view, taking into account the different local realities of Basins and Countries.

Energy Transition is affecting the level of interest of younger generations in Geosciences in general and in the O&G sector in particular. ICE 2023 would like to reignite young professionals’ interest in the Energy sector as new generations are critical for the future of our sector. If you are a student or young professional, ICE 2023 will bring you the opportunity to better understand current trends, interact with professionals from the sector and share your concerns with prospective employers.

Last but not least, we would like to invite you to take the ICE 2023 opportunity to discover the great city of Madrid. Its world-class art, museums and gastronomy, its rich history and culture and the passion with which the people of Madrid enjoy both days and nights make the capital of Spain one of the most attractive cities in the world.

On behalf of the ICE 2023 Organizing Committee, we would like to thank you for joining us in Madrid, bringing your expertise and your knowledge to this premier geoscience conference. We encourage you to be active participants, share your views freely and openly, renew old relationships, and make new ones. We are living critical moments for the Global Energy sector and the Petroleum Geoscientists voices should be relevant and should be heard. ICE 2023 is the perfect setting to make it happen.
